G'day all,

Since most of you are at that stage where you are almost out of that dreaded prison system they fancifully call 'school' and you're doing your GSCE's (If that is what they are called) or in my case the HSC.

Has anyone developed any really top notch study programs for home that have helped them tremendously? Just trying to figure out a few ways to model something thats going to help me, because no longer do they like having good marks, its all about having excellent marks and making the top rank in subjects in order to get a good ATAR.

Just a bit of a helpful hand is all I need, want to get this right before its too late, I'm sure most of us are striving for some university course or another.

Cheers all

It always sounds rediculous, and it's loads of effort and I've only recently been bothered to do it -but putting notes up around the house genuinely works...

I tend to make notes... Then make notes of my notes (just copying them from the previous notes.) Then I attempt to re-write the notes, without looking at them, to see how much I can remember.

Doing past papers, if possible, also helps a lot (:

I don't know though... My 'technique' is hardly unusual XD It seems to work though.

I did Mogo's idea for my AP history exam last year. I took all of my notes and tapped them to walls of my room, and had them on the floor...everything was covered and it was insane XD

I also discovered a new technique last year in Chemistry that our teacher told us to do, that I decided to do with Biology. (should have done it sooner)
If you have a review book for a course, get a sheet of computer paper for each topic/section and condense everything you need to know from that section onto the sheet. Abbreviate, hyphenate, write smallish, whatever. When you're done not only do you have everything on a few sheets of paper but you have also worked with the material for a while and probably already remember it better. :)
(different colored sheets are even better...)

I just relax. If you relax the night before, it frees your mind up. The more relaxed you are the better you'll be in the exam. No point trying to revise the night before as it will just confuse you. Well, it does for me anyway. Not really advise or tips but I hope it helps.

May the Guardian run with you,

Cheers guys, yeah I have a few good note taking programs to develop decent notes, but Ill try this condensing every subject one, however the amount of work in our courses I don't see how I could fit on one page. A mate of mine for Business tried to condense the entire subject as best as he could and that fit 30 pages XD

My other plan is and feel free to try it to, is every day after school when you get home have a notebook for all your subjects and summarise what you learnt in each subject that day. Apparently its extremely good for long term memory.

Believe me, the amount of memorization in IB Biology is unbelievable. Thank God review books already condense it a bit :D

Oh, if you want to get psychological about it...
    state dependent memory ;D
    chunking ;D

aha I do biology, the amount of content is slowly but surely stacking up and next term is end of the year (aka preliminary exam) then term after that begins year 12 aka HSC year D:

Aha well I can agree with the psychology of it, but wow chunking is full on enough XD

When I still did drama, one of the best things to do was go to sleep with your ipod on playing a recording of your speech or whatever was needed. Downside was that you'd wake up at 3AM with cords wrapped around you :P

Sorry I meant state dependant memory, chunking is what I am doing right now though I mightve failed and snuck on the clan XD

    @BlackWolff (too lazy to quote)

...so does that mean your Biology is a two-year course as well?

I went to sleep while listening to my Ipod once, not fun XD (well, when I woke that is)

    The Clan is evil :(

@slywolf basically yeah, year 11 is the whole preliminary course then year 12 is HSC. When year 12 comes obviously there'll be new topics but there'll be a lot of cross over from previously learnt stuff.

Yeah the waking up part is not worth it XD

@BlackWolff yeah, my course is IB HL (Higher-Level) Biology, so it's a two-year course. If it was standard level it'd be one year. So yeah, new topics, but naturally there probably will be some revisiting of old things.

    No xD
